I work in a company that offers Ferries to France services. I have been for some years in the tourism industry and I like it so far. There are lots of career opportunities for young people who are just starting to work in cruises. You only need to be hardworking and strong enough to spend a lot of time with no contact with your family. The salary is pretty good and you save a lot of money because you don’t pay for food or accommodation. The food is really good because you eat what the guests eat and you can actually eat as much as you want or can….
Working in a ferry give you the chance of meeting lots of people from different nationalities. It is quite interesting being surrounded by the sound of different languages being spoken at the same time in the same room. I love languages. My French isn’t that perfect but I have good command of it. English is used among the passengers because it is very rare to find people that speak French before they speak English. So my English is also good enough to have a conversation.
Many people that come in Ferries to France have this idea that Paris and France are the places of love. They come thinking that they will live an adventure that will change their live forever. It is actually funny because I read an article about people killing themselves when they got disappointed, specially Japanese and oriental people in general. Since I read that article I tell to people about it every time I have the chance. I don’t know why but it feels weird not telling them having into account that some people have actually lost their live because of this believe. Maybe I am exaggerating but anyways let’s say that I like taking their dreams down. I hope my boss doesn’t hear me or he won’t like it. I’m only joking.
We have very nice ships where we can offer lots services to the customers. In some special occasions we have had even wedding happening inside a ship. The nice part is that everyone participates even though they don’t know the couple that is getting married.
Sometimes we also have birthdays and the party is huge! Some passengers are kind enough to let the crew enjoy the party too. This rarely happens but it does happen.
Being in a ship away from home makes you a little bit lonely so when someone shows affection to you, you really appreciate it. I have made many good friends in this career and I think they will remain being close friend during all my life.
